Fire Water Paper: A Vietname Oratorio by Elliot Goldenthal was commissioned by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra in 1993 to reflect on the human experience of the Vietnam War. The performances coincided with the war's formal end on April 30, 1975. Fire Water Paper is scored for soprano, baritone, chorus, children's chorus and large orchestra, including eight French horns and an expanded percussion section. The first movement, "Offertorium", is based on two metaphors, self-sacrifice, offering one's life for others; and the element of fire, which appears throughout this movement in several different forms. Vietnam's predominant religions, Buddhism and Catholicism, inspired Goldenthal's choice of texts in the opening section, divided between Vietnamese and qoutations from the Requiem Mass and Stabat Mater. ...Additional notes soon.
